Dubai water quality report — 2026 data from 2,100 homes

TL;DR
2026 TDS averages across Dubai are 8–12% higher than 2024 baselines, driven by record summer heat accelerating rooftop-tank degradation. Chlorine levels stable. Microplastic prevalence unchanged.

Every quarter we compile the TDS, chlorine, pH and visible-contamination data from every home we test and install in. By end of Q1 2026 we had 2,163 complete home profiles across Dubai — enough to draw reliable trend lines by neighbourhood and season.

This report is the short version. We publish the full dataset (anonymised, by community) on request to residents and researchers.

TDS: up slightly, worst in older districts

Dubai-wide median TDS at the consumer tap for Q1 2026 was 445 mg/L — up from 412 mg/L in Q1 2024. The increase is driven entirely by older districts: Deira climbed from 580 to 680 mg/L median, Bur Dubai from 520 to 620. Newer communities (Dubai Hills, Creek Harbour) held flat at 320–370 mg/L.

The most likely cause is 2025's prolonged heat wave — Dubai recorded 23 days above 48°C, compared to a 2010–2020 average of 11 days. Hotter rooftop tanks accelerate leaching from 30-year-old PE tanks more than from newer fibreglass-composite ones.

Chlorine: stable, peaks at 5–8 PM

DEWA's chlorine dosing has been steady at 0.3–0.8 mg/L residual for years. Our 2026 data confirms: median 0.52 mg/L, 95th percentile 0.94 mg/L. The top-up-driven evening peak (5–8 PM) is reliably 30–40% higher than morning baselines.

Microplastics: unchanged

We find microplastic fragments in 86–94% of tap samples, essentially identical to our 2024 data. This is consistent with global tap-water baselines and driven by rooftop-tank storage rather than upstream DEWA handling.

What to do with this

If you live in Deira, Bur Dubai, Satwa, Al Ras or any pre-2005 building elsewhere, 2026 is a worse year for your tap quality than 2024 was. Your kettle is probably scaling faster. Your skin may feel drier than it used to. An RO + shower-filter install will close the gap.

If you're in a 2018+ community, your water is still fine on the median — but the microplastic baseline won't improve on its own, and rooftop-tank heat in July–September will push things over.
