Chlorine in your tap, how much, why, how to remove.

TL;DR
DEWA doses 0.3–1.0 mg/L residual chlorine — legal, effective, and enough to mess with taste, hair and skin in hot showers. Granular activated carbon handles cold-water drinking; KDF-55 handles hot-water showering.

DEWA (Dubai Electricity and Water Authority) adds chlorine or chloramine to tap water as a bacterial safeguard, targeting 0.3–1.0 mg/L residual at the consumer tap. That's within WHO guidelines and keeps water microbially safe through long distribution runs and rooftop tanks. It's also enough to taste, smell and — at hot-shower temperatures — to interact with your skin and hair.

Chlorine decays along the distribution line, so taps closer to the plant or at the start of a pipe run see higher residuals. Evening peaks (5–8 PM) tend to register higher than early-morning measurements because of fresh upstream top-ups.

Why chlorine matters more in Dubai than in Europe

Two Dubai-specific factors amplify chlorine's effects. First, rooftop tanks heat tap water to 28–38°C even before the hot-water heater kicks in. Warmer water makes chlorine more volatile — more of it enters the air as a gas you inhale, and it reacts more aggressively with the protein layers in your hair and skin.

Second, hot showers in Dubai summer climb to 40–42°C at the showerhead. A 10-minute shower exposes you to more chlorine by skin absorption and inhalation than you would consume in a week of drinking the same water. That's why dermatologists in Dubai see chlorine-triggered dryness, eczema flare-ups, and hair thinning complaints that mysteriously improve with a shower filter.

How to actually remove chlorine

At the drinking tap: granular activated carbon (GAC) and carbon block adsorb chlorine at cold-water temperatures with 90–99% efficiency. A 7-stage RO stacks GAC + carbon block pre-filters before the RO membrane, so by the time water reaches your glass chlorine is essentially undetectable.

At the shower: carbon stops working. Adsorption capacity drops ~40% for every 10°C increase. The correct media for hot water is KDF-55, a copper-zinc alloy that removes chlorine electrochemically, not by adsorption. KDF works at any temperature Dubai plumbing can deliver and also tackles iron, hydrogen sulphide and heavy metals.

The PureOas package includes both: GAC + carbon block pre-filters for the kitchen tap, KDF-55 + coconut activated carbon for the shower. Installed the same evening. Shower filter free with every order.
