Dubai hard water, why your kettle keeps scaling.
Water hardness is a measure of dissolved calcium and magnesium, expressed as "mg/L as CaCO₃" or degrees of hardness. Anything above 180 mg/L CaCO₃ is officially "very hard." Dubai tap water routinely sits in the 160–320 mg/L range, putting nearly every apartment in the "hard" to "very hard" zone.
Hardness by itself isn't dangerous. The mineral content is actually slightly beneficial for drinking (dietary calcium/magnesium). But it is visible, annoying, and expensive — it crusts heating elements, shortens dishwasher life, hazes glassware, dulls laundry colour, and clogs showerheads.
How to tell your Dubai water is hard
White scale on your kettle within 2 weeks of descaling. A ring of mineral residue at the waterline in pots after boiling. Soap that refuses to lather the way it did back home. Shower glass that fogs white after a week. Dark clothes fading to grey within 30 washes. Skin that feels tight after every shower, regardless of body wash. These are all hardness symptoms, not coincidence.
A home hardness test strip (around AED 30 for a pack of 50) will tell you your exact level in 15 seconds. Or we'll bring a calibrated meter and test for free.
RO vs. water softener in Dubai
A water softener swaps calcium and magnesium for sodium via ion exchange, servicing the entire house — every tap, shower, dishwasher, washing machine. It doesn't remove chlorine, microplastics or anything else. Cost in Dubai: AED 6,000–12,000 installed plus salt replenishment.
A 7-stage RO sits under your kitchen sink and gives you filtered water for drinking and cooking only — all contaminants removed, minerals rebalanced. Cost: AED 1,199 installed. It doesn't soften the water at your shower or dishwasher — that's what the included shower filter is for.
For most Dubai families the right answer is "both eventually" — start with RO + shower filter (AED 1,199) because drinking water is where the worst contamination matters most. Upgrade to a whole-house softener later if scale on appliances bothers you.
What a PureOas install does to hardness
At the drinking tap: 99% hardness removal. A kitchen that was reading 240 mg/L CaCO₃ drops to ~3 mg/L. Kettle scale stops. Coffee tastes cleaner. Glassware comes out clear.
At the shower: the included KDF-55 filter removes 85–95% of chlorine and reduces heavy-metal leaching. It does not soften the water — that would require whole-house treatment — but it stops the ingredient doing most of the hair/skin damage.
